Go Malaysia!

Tags: , , ,

Today Lee Chong Wei, top badminton player from Malaysia would be facing off with China's Lin Dan, currently the number one player in the world. A pretty good introduction about Lee can be found here.

Also, what makes this match particularly exciting is that Malaysia is finally a match away from bagging its first ever Olympics Gold Medal! If Lee does it, this will definitely be Malaysia's best ever Merdeka gift!

To join in the excitement, I'll be playing badminton tomorrow at Prince George's Park with the gang, thereafter we will be gathering by the TV cheering Lee on.

Go for it Chong Wei! Do us proud!

[Update: And so Malaysia's hope for her first gold medal has been dashed. Chong Wei lost two straight sets to Lin Dan, who played extremely well. It's a pity that Chong Wei performed rather badly during the short 40 odd minutes match. Ah well, better luck next time then. ]

Beijing 2008 Olympics Kicks Off!

Tags: , ,

And so it happened last night at 8:30pm Kuala Lumpur time, 08.08.2008.

I was watching the Opening Ceremony at home yesterday with my family. We all cheered when the Malaysian Olympic team marched onto the field, bearing our flag. There were 204 countries, many of them unheard of. Looks like i need more Geography lessons.

The opening ceremony was spectacular, and Sarah Brightman did a wonderful job, together with her Chinese duet partner Liu Huan. I would say the most impressive act would be the final leg of the torch relay, where Li Ning, a Chinese gymnast gold medaller, encircled the stadium with a "scroll" rolled out before him in mid air. A huge cauldron positioned at the tip of the Bird Nest was litted at the end of Li's "air-walk", lighting up the stadium with huge burst of flames, sending the crowd into a wild frenzy. Trully a awe-inspiring scene to behold.

I am impressed by China's effort in making the Games a success. Though the preparations are not without incident i.e. the Sichuan earthquake, Tibetan unrise and the recent event at Xinjiang, at that moment, China trully held the world's attention and admiration.

Congratulations China! At the same time, let's not forget our local atlhetes competing in Beijing now. All the best to the Malaysian envoy!
