A recent insight is from Fred Wilson, on the topic of writing online.
He said, which is an interesting way to think about it, that writing online is a conversation.
One of the main obstacles to my writing more frequently is the mental block of writing ‘perfectly’ and the self-defeating thought of ‘how am I contributing more noise to the online sphere?’
Which is why I think Fred’s advice here is very relevant:
The number one thing I hear from people who want to write online more is that they struggle to publish incomplete ideas and unpolished compositions.
What I have learned from writing online regularly for over twenty years is that writing online is a conversation.
What I mean by that is that you are not trying to publish complete ideas. You are engaging in a conversation with the world and you are a participant in that.
As with any conversation, I should expect agreements and disagreements. And since this would be online in the public sphere, one would have to deal with trolls, keyboard warriors, etc.
I suppose the benefit of working in public to get smarter by having debates and dialogues outweighs the cost of dealing with the fear of saying something stupid, so here goes.
